This month's spiritual practice is Examen- a way of reflecting over your day/week/year in prayer to notice where God has been active and how God might be leading you.
Here's another way to ask the questions:
When did I give and receive the most love this week?
When did I give and receive the least love this week?
So find your quiet space- both physical and mental- and set this time aside for being in God's presence.
I gave and received the most love this week in the time spent with my husband in daily Bible reading and prayer. This is new for us to do together. We usually do these things on our own. We're hoping we keep it up and grow closer to each other as we're growing closer to God.
I gave and received the least love this week when I tried to do too many things in a certain amount of time and got impatient with myself and my son. (This happens many times each week it seems). I pray that I learn to expect less of each day so that the time can be filled with the important things.
God, help me to keep commitments that are places of growth and let go of the things I only think need to get done. Amen.
This is the first installation of weekly interviews that I will be posting with students, faculty, and Wesley Foundation Board members. Hopefully you'll find out more about who we are and what we do here at Wesley Foundation Merced.
Jaime is the UC Wesley Club President and a member of the class of 2013 at UC Merced. He is studying Human Biology.
So, why UC Merced?
It was very close to home and had good science programs.
What's it like to be at such a new school?
The biggest thing is that we have small classes and you get to know more people.
Why are you part of Wesley Campus Ministries?
Because I met you. (aw, how sweet).I wanted to be part of a faith growing club.
How do you hope you will be different between now and when you graduate from here?
I hope to be more experienced in diverse areas of life.
What is a blessing you have received from Wesley Foundation Merced?
An opportunity to help and do community service. And also to have God be part of school.
What is your prayer for Wesley Club?
That we can grow.
What is your favorite place on campus?
The grass staircase because it is out of the way and quiet.
What are your words of wisdom to a high school junior who might be reading this?
You will have freedom in college to make your own choices. It's an opportunity to learn about life.
Thank you Jaime for being the first! And for being a student leader for the ministry!
Tonight Wesley House members came down to the United Methodist Church to help prepare for the food pantry distribution tomorrow. But when they arrived, the work was all done! Somehow the group that had assembled at 5:00 were so efficient that the job got done in half the time as usual.
But instead of being disappointed that they couldn't help with that job, they stuck around and were able to get a few extra things done. You know, the things on the "to do" list that you never get to because everything else is so urgent. So now, the storage area is cleaned out better and everything that was being saved for tomorrow is done. The leader of this ministry was able to go home early and without the nagging thoughts of more to do.
Thanks Wesley House for being an extra blessing!
Random drinking fountain on the way to campus promises rest and refreshment. I always wondered if it worked. It does. Promise kept.
